National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development mostly called as NABARD was established on July 12, year 1982 through an Act of the Indian Parliament.

The bank was set up as an apex bank for the development in the field of agriculture and rural areas. The bank has its headquarters in Mumbai with its branches spread all over the nation. All cooperative banks, commercial banks, state government and its entities, regional rural banks and various NGOs and universities can take the benefits of services and products offered by NABARD.

Major functions of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural development include offering refinance to rural finance institutions, offering developmental and financial policy support to small scale initiatives, to assess, to observe and inspect the working of cooperative banks and regional rural banks. NABARD has also tied up with number of NGOs and agencies to cover the more area in agriculture and rural sector.

NABARD offers financial assistance to various commercial banks and state governments after their need and situation is thoroughly evaluated and approved by its Board of Directors.

Apart from this, NABARD also conducts a detailed study of different sectors related with the development of rural and agriculture sector that are in need of financial assistance. This study is referred as State Focus Paper and is conducted and published by NABARD every year, which then forwards it to the state governments and the banks.

NABARD also prepares a list of Potential Linked Credit Plans (PLPs) in order to evaluate the investment potential in rural and agriculture development in all the districts across the nation. The bank releases this document every year and makes this available to all the state governments and banks.

NABARD conducts numerous training and counselling sessions for the organizations and banks involved in the rural development. NABARD appoints officers on various technical and managerial posts including Risk Managers, Electrical Engineers, Senior Officers, Banks officers and project managers.

All the profiles have different eligibility criteria to meet. The bank also offers jobs on contract basis from time to time and offer on the job-training to the appointees, this contract period usually lasts for the period of two years. In case a candidate successfully completes his or her two years of service and is found appropriate and compatible for the profile, after a certain selection process he is absorbed as a permanent bank employee.

The application forms are shortlisted on the basis of age, academic qualifications and also the work experience. The shortlisted candidates are then called for the interview process.
